Kiosks Gaining Traction At US Convenience Stores

Feb 11 2005 : Several Exxon Mobil TigerMarket and On The Run convenience stores in Nashville, Tennessee, are using kiosks to deliver multiple services including bill payment and prepaid mobile recharge. The E-Wiz kiosks, first deployed in Memphis, Tennessee in 2004, facilitate cash-based financial transactions such as money transfers, prepaid products and services and mobile phone content. Speedway SuperAmerica, the third-largest convenience store chain in the US, is also piloting kiosks at 26 stores in Ohio, for various services such as auto insurance, maps and bill payments.

C-stores that use kiosks to automate routine transactions such as prepaid wireless recharge, bill payments or the purchase of prepaid services benefit from new revenue streams while increasing in-store foot traffic. Consumers similalry welcome the ability to make financial transactions, cash checks, transfer funds or buy a PIN for prepaid services while at a convenience store. In 2002, 7-Eleven was the first US c-store to use kiosks to provide financial services, and its competitors are now moving to tap the business benefits of servicing the lucrative underbanked market.
